Most North Americans have heard of the term Canadian bacon. The term has two meanings with the first being an actual food item that appears on many breakfast menus and the second is the movie.

Canadian Bacon directed by Michael Moore and staring John Candy as Sheriff Bud Boomer was released September 22, 1995. Dan Aykroyd another well known Canadian actor plays the part of an OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) officer. We have seen this movie several times. It's a comedy with good Canadian actors and filled with many Canadianisms. The more you watch it the more Canadian myths you will see. There is a lot of anti-Canadian sentiments in this comedy. While they are funny since Canadians have no problem laughing at themselves and while the director took creative license they are still myths and assumptions. The terms RMCP and RCMP are used in the movie showing a complete lack of respect for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) one of Canada's most recognizable and beloved icons.
While this is a comedy with a few Canadian actors I still have to find fault. Yes it was funny the movie perpetuated myths about Canada that simply are that. They were then and still are myths! As Canadians many saw the humour and were polite about it because after all Canadians have a reputation for being polite however, some were offended. I think to some respects having Canadian actors perpetuating the myths was a bit more offending than the director thought it would be. In retrospect this movie along with other myths widely perpetuated in North America were fodder for Rick Mercer of Canada's This Hour Has 22 Minutes segments called Talking to Americans.
Peameal Bacon aka Canadian Bacon
I love Canadian bacon so imagine my surprise when we stopped for breakfast in Duluth, Minnesota years ago for breakfast on our way out west. Now Duluth is only about 3 hours (259 km) from the Canadian border so I'm pretty sure they should know what Canadian bacon is. I ordered pancakes with Canadian bacon. The bacon that came with my pancakes was very close to what you would get if you took rolled ham, sliced it thin then fried it. Talk about a total disappointment but this is what Americans call Canadian bacon. Through our many travels in the USA that is what you will get if you order Canadian bacon. That is NOT Canadian bacon!
Canadian bacon is made by curing pork loin and it likely came to be from the French families who settled in Canada. It is very much a southwestern Ontario delicacy but can be found in other areas of Canada. It is very seldom found outside of Canada with the exception of some border towns and Canadians who make their own. It is usually marketed as peameal or sweet pickled bacon. Once the meat has cured it is rolled in cornmeal a substitute for the original peameal (ground peas) used for the coating. The bacon is then sliced and fried or baked then sliced. Peameal bacon is served as bacon for breakfast or as a lunchmeat or as the meat portion for dinner. Unlike regular cured side bacon, peameal bacon is very lean. Pork Tourtière is also known as French Canadian pork pie. My early French Canadian ancestors would have brought a very similar recipe with them in the very early 1600's. This pie was originally made with game something that would have served my ancestors well until their farms were established. Because pigs were important for the survival of farms in Québec, pork was later substituted for game.If you would like to make this truly Canadian dish the recipe can be found here.
Traditionally Pork Tourtière is served as part of the Christmas celebrations, often served upon returning from Midnight Mass. My eighth great grandparents would have not only served this meal Christmas Eve but likely ate it often through the winter months. My second great grandparents (cira. 1808-1872) would have served this dish with turnip and perhaps an apple desert of some type, more than likely applesauce. The pie crust would have been made with lard so for an authentic taste, use lard instead of shortening and the pork would have been ground at home. The pie would have been bake either in a fireplace later a woodstove. It is a simple, unpretentious dish that is true comfort food.

Smaller rustic cabins are scattered throughout rural areas in Ontario. These are often used for three seasons of the year but some are used year round. These cabins are generally passed down from generation to generation. Quite often the cabins are set on lakes or streams in rather remote locations. The pictured cabin in Northern Ontario is owned by a good friend of ours.
I cannot believe how fast this blog has come together as far as design goes. Back when I started blogging in 2005 I never dreamt I would be able to put a blot together in under 24 hours. Well, what you see before you came together in less that 24 hours. I think it looks pretty good but there will be a lot more tweaking. I'm getting excited now!

Welcome to my Canadian Perspective blog. I am an experienced blogger who currently writes blogs under the following topics: cooking, gardening, personal journal and homemaking. My online nym is Garden Gnome or GG. You can read more about me in my profile. I am a very proud Canadian who loves my country very, very much. I am very blessed to live in such a beautiful country! While the fact that I am Canadian comes up over and over in my other blogs I wanted to create a clearly Canadian blog that will show Canada as I see it from my eyes. I want to show what Canada means to me in all its beauty, uniqueness and so much more.
Setting up a new blog is always a scary yet exciting venture. First and foremost is whether I can write and present information in such a fashion that others are interested. Second is can I design a blog that meshes with the content both in design and layout. Colour is a very important component as well. So while I have this idea swirling around in my head of what direction I want to take with this direction, time will only tell if it will be successful. The final concern is always time. Finding content does not seem to be a problem for me but finding time to blog the content is.
