Ever since I can remember I've heard the comment that there is "no difference" between Canadians and Americans. I respectfully beg to differ as there is a difference on so many levels! We have unique Canadian culture consisting of Canadianisms, a Canadian perspective on world events, Canadian cuisine as well as products and foods only available in Canada. This blog is dedicated to celebrating all things Canadian from "my perspective" as a Canadian. Please enjoy your visit and be sure to visit often.

Americans should never underestimate the constant pressure on Canada which the mere presence of the United States has produced. We're different people from you and we're different people because of you. Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is effected by every twitch and grunt. It should not therefore be expected that this kind of nation, this Canada, should project itself as a mirror image of the United States.

Snow Day

Southern Ontario is still cleaning up after the recent rather horrid snowstorm.  This time the weather predictions were quite accurate however, as Rick Mercer points out, the weather coverage is much to be desired.  Seriously, they over react as if they are on some type of reality show that is far from real!  Some of the weather coverage has become fear mongering to the point folks fearing the worst make a special trip to the store to stock up because 'they may get snowed in'.  We live in Canada.  Snow and snowstorms are normal for winter, so everyone who lives here should be prepared to deal with a snowstorm.  We don't need the drama in weather reporting!

Liberals to Continue Their Destruction of Ontario

We are off to a fine start for 2014!  Earlier in 2013, Ontario Hydro announced that hydro rates would increase by 42% over the next couple of years.  This is disastrous for the province of Ontario!  We are already seeing larger corporations moving their operations out of Ontario.  In fact, Heinz said the rising hydro rates was the primary reason why it was closing it's Leamington operations, sending 700 folks to the unemployment line.  Now, I ask you how exactly are unemployed folks supposed to pay the outrageous hydro rates that are already the highest in Canada and quickly increasing?  Liquidation World, formerly Canadian owned and recently bought by the company that owns Big Lots in the US, is ceasing operation as of February 15, 2014 sending more to the unemployment line.  They are systematically driving businesses out of Ontario especially the smaller Mom & Pop operations that can no longer afford the high cost of hydro, high taxes, the HST and basically the higher cost of operations in Ontario.  There are reports of Ontario Hydro shutting off power to businesses because their pricey Smart Meter is malfunctioning so instead of checking the meter or replacing it, they are simply disconnecting the service which effectively puts the business - out of business.  The Liberals are not going to be satisfied until Ontario is one giant ghost town!

What does Bob Chiarelli, Ontario's energy minister have to say?  He says it is time for folks to take responsibility for their hydro use.  Excuse me Bob but we do take full responsibility for our hydro use.  We conserve the snot out of using hydro.  Our hydro usage comes in at the 20 percentile meaning 80% of our neighbours and homes of similar design use considerably more hydro than we do.  The only incandescent bulbs (already in the process of being phased out) in our house are in our oven and refrigerator.  We bought, at great expense to us, CFL bulbs and are now slowly switching whatever bulbs we can to LED as we can afford them.  We even invested in the Nest learning thermostat, a step up from a programmable thermostat so we can save even more on heating and cooling of which we are already stingy about using.  We keep our HVAC well maintained.  We gave up having a television in our bedroom and bought a newer EnergyStar rated television  that is rarely on during the day.  Our washer and dryer are HE EnergyStar rated as well.  We switched from cooking with hydro to natural gas and did the same thing for our dryer.  Our hydro usage averages $35 but the bill is about $120 by the time all the extra fees and taxes are added.  It is not the hydro that is costing us, it is the Ontario government's greedy little hands in our pockets!

From this Canadian's perspective, I hate what the Liberals have and are continuing to do to Ontario!  Perhaps when there are no more jobs, no more businesses and folks either begging on the streets or huddled in their dark homes unable to pay the hydro so have to go without, they might just listen.  I doubt it because quite frankly they aren't the ones suffering.  They have their fat pay cheques and if they get out of politics, their fat pensions.  They will never know what it is like to not be able to afford such a basic luxury like hydro!  They should be ashamed of themselves!  On the other hand, if there is a mass exodus from Ontario by business and residents AKA the taxpayers, they just might not be able to raise enough taxes to afford their lavish lifestyles.  Perhaps if they had to struggle to pay their hydro they would finally understand how we, the taxpayers of Ontario feel!
